Your Mission
Create and test a fictional transit map that makes a rainy-day imaginary town feel easy to explore.
What You'll Need
- Paper or a blank page in a notebook
- Pencil and eraser
- Optional colored pencils or markers
- Optional ruler or straight edge
How to Do the Quest
- 1
Invent a small town with six to ten destinations, such as a garden, art hall, skate park, market, library, or made-up landmark; keep all place names fictional.
- 2
Choose two or three transit lines and decide which destinations each line serves, including at least one transfer stop where routes meet.
- 3
Sketch a simple, readable map rather than a geographically exact one; add a title, a stop key, and a clear starting point.
- 4
Make each route distinguishable with both a color and a pattern, letter, or symbol so the map still works for someone who cannot tell the colors apart.
- 5
Write a tiny trip prompt, such as getting from the garden to the art hall, and ask a friend to trace a route using only your map and legend.
- 6
Notice where your friend hesitates, clarify the confusing junction or label, and add one useful access note such as a step-free transfer in your imaginary system.
Quest Challenge
Can a friend trace two different trips from your map and explain the transfer point without asking you what any symbol means?
Pro Tip
A transit map is a communication tool, not a scale drawing: prioritize consistent symbols, legible labels, and a legend that answers questions before they come up.
Safety First
Keep every town, station, and trip fictional; do not map a teen's home, school, regular route, or another person's identifying details, and do not present the design as real transit guidance.
