Your Mission
Give a familiar family dog a calm indoor sniffing mission while the kids practice watching, waiting, and noticing. An adult prepares the space and manages every piece of food; the dog decides whether to join and when to stop.
What You'll Need
- A few small pieces of the dog's usual food, approved by the adult who manages its diet
- One familiar room with clear, non-slip floor space
How to Do the Quest
- 1
Ask the dog's adult whether a few pieces of its usual food are appropriate today. Choose a relaxed dog that is comfortable around the children, and agree that kids will not touch the dog or its food during the game.
- 2
Clear one familiar room of small objects, other pets, toys, and anything the dog should not eat. The adult keeps the dog out of the search area during setup and places three pieces of food in separate, open spots on the floor—not under furniture or beside hazards.
- 3
Bring the child to a comfortable viewing spot with the supervising adult. Invite the dog into the room and let the child say, ‘Find it’ once. The adult stays close enough to manage the dog and every piece of food.
- 4
Let the dog sniff at its own pace. The child can quietly point out where it is searching, without leaning over the dog, reaching toward its face, or stepping into the food area.
- 5
If the dog is relaxed and interested, the adult can set up one more round with three easy-to-see pieces. Keep the search area clear and end before the dog becomes tired or overexcited.
- 6
Count the pieces together, collect anything left on the floor, and finish with a calm break. If the dog walks away or the child feels unsure, stop the game without trying to coax either one back.
Quest Challenge
Can the dog find three easy-to-see pieces at a calm pace, with the child observing from a comfortable spot?
Pro Tip
Use a few pieces from the dog's normal daily food, with its caregiver's approval, instead of adding extra treats.
Safety First
An adult must stay fully present and supervise the dog and child throughout. Use only a familiar, relaxed dog and food its caregiver has approved; skip the activity if the dog guards food, seems uncomfortable, or is unwell. Keep children away from the dog's eating and sleeping spaces, and never let them take food or toys from its mouth. Stop if the dog moves away, becomes tense, or the child feels unsure. Keep the floor clear and use a secure gate if the adult judges that a barrier is needed; do not run the game if safe separation is not possible.
